Your voice and personal experience can be a powerful life lesson that creates a beautiful connection for those willing to listen. Have the courage to share!
Oh, what a wonderful time was had at this years Calgary Woman's Show on October 20th and 21st! Not only were we given a fabulous corner location, we also got to spend the entire weekend sharing our story with a diverse audience of women, many of whom took the time to also share with us their own personal accounts of triumph and tribulation. It really was quite cathartic and an experience that I hope we can repeat soon.
Our message was simple. The Nest Calgary is all about working together and creating a community that empowers mother and child to move forward in the face of adversity. Our concept is largely based on the belief that ‘it takes a whole village to raise a child’ and that all mothers, regardless of circumstance, are worthy of an extended family who can support and reassure her as she lays the foundation for herself and child.
A huge component of our campaign is to welcome in community and invite them to ‘help build the nest’. Sure, the short-term focus is on generating the funds and man power necessary to initially open our doors but more importantly, the long-term vision is to situate The Nest Calgary as a strong collective – or one cog in a continuum of care - that provides holistic and wrap-around support when a young mother is at her most vulnerable and in desperate need of knowing that everything is going to be okay.
“Every mother and child thriving in a safe and productive home” is not an unrealistic vision.
At The Nest Calgary, we believe this to be an outcome of both external and internal support systems coming together as a village to make life happen. It is about creating maternal optimism despite hardships, increasing protective factors that contribute to resiliency and maybe most importantly, it is about embracing the potential in all female led families because they are worth the effort.
As strong champions for single mothers who are working hard to become the person and parent that they are meant to be, our focus is on building societal support while breaking down stigma and the stereotypes. To do this, we are giving young mothers a platform to share their experience and have their voices heard in an effort to help pave the way for brighter futures. If you would like to share your own story, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org as I would love to provide you with an opportunity to do so.
We will continue to be out in community and hope that you will join us. With a goal of opening our doors by summer 2019, we really do need the support of a village and ask that you please give where you can to help build the nest!
